12 Self-Care Ideas For the Holidays

Hello my little darlings!

It’s mid-November, which means the holiday season is upon us and things start getting crazy, fast. It can be so easy around this time of year to get overwhelmed and burnt out, I know it happens to me sometimes. Practising self-care can help you to get through this manic time without getting too distressed. So what better time to share some ways to relax and refresh, just in time for the holiday season? Without further ado, here are some great options for self-care to keep you in a good headspace.

  • If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. Look, it used to be all about the FOMO, but luckily it’s changed to the JOMO- or the joy of missing out. This time of year is filled with things to do, people to see, but honestly that can get over whelming. If it doesn’t feel like something that will bring you joy or lift you up, just leave it. Allow yourself the freedom to give things a miss.
  • Get some fresh air. Being outdoors can be really refreshing. You don’t have to make it complicated, even something as simple as going for a short walk can help to clear your head and boost your mood.
  • Do some pampering. While you’re out shopping and gifting for everyone else, it isn’t always easy to remember yourself. But remember that you are important too! Get your hair done, paint your nails, get a pedicure, spend extra time applying your makeup. It doesn’t have to take long, but it can help give you a little pick me up.
  • Change your bedding. It’s such a small thing but fresh bedsheets are probably one of the best things in the world. Changing the bedding can feel like shaking off all the old stress and having a nice, clean slate. And there are few things that can beat that clean laundry scent.
  • Be pragmatic. Some people find the best way to relax is to get ahead. Take some time to do things that will keep you from getting swamped. Whether that means decluttering, organizing, writing out plans or lists, budgeting…whatever it is, just sit down and do it. Chances are you’ll feel much more relaxed just knowing you got something done.
  • Read a book. Reading can be amazing because it lets your imagination run wild. Whether you’re into mystery, fantasy, or any other genre, that doesn’t matter. You’ll be able to escape your current headspace and go into another world.
  • Unplug yourself. Because there are so many things going on during this time of year, it’s easy to get wrapped up in it all. Between the constant emails, promotions, texts about what plans are, etc etc, it’s a lot. Take some time each day to set down your phone, laptop, tablet-whatever, and just be. On weekends, spend as much time as possible unplugged, just to clear your head.
  • Hang out with your pet. Studies have shown that having an animal around can reduce stress levels. Take advantage of this and give your bestie a cuddle. Don’t have a pet? Visit a local shelter and give the pups and kitties some love. That’s a win-win, because it helps socialize the animals, so you’re giving back as well!
  • Binge watch some TV. When the real world gets overwhelming, it can be nice to get swept into a completely different one. There’s so many shows out there to get wrapped up in, so pick one and get stuck in. Make it extra relaxing with cosy pjs, a warm blanket and your favourite treat.
  • Have a hot drink. There’s just something about drinking something nice and warm that seems to soothe the soul. Sometimes even just the action of making it can get you out of a bad headspace and focused on the task. No matter if you go for tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or something else, the effect is the same. It’s like a hug for your insides.
  • Take a bath. Is there anything more relaxing than a warm bath? I think not. Load it up with salts, oils, perhaps some bubbles while you soak away the stress.
  • Don’t overextend yourself. This time of year, it can be so easy to overcommit yourself, whether that’s with time or financially. Don’t put yourself in debt to please other people. On the same token, don’t say yes to plans just to make others happy. Do what’s best for you, and take it all one day at a time.

It is certainly a busy time of year, but taking time to make sure you are happy and healthy is important as well. Make sure to give yourself the time and space to stay sane. I hope these ideas are helpful to some of you. If you have any more ideas, please share them below in the comments. I’d love to know what you do to relax and practise self-care in the holiday season!

As always, thanks for reading & stay golden!
